Karlheinz Stockhausen - MIKROPHONIE I
for 6 players with tam-tam, 2 microphones and 2 filters with potentiometers
In 1964, German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen purchased a gigantic tam-tam, 155 centimeters in diameter, at an instrument fair in Frankfurt. Because of its enormous size, he had to suspend it in his garden. One day, he collected utensils like pots and spoons from the kitchen, took a microphone, and walked out to the tam-tam. Scraping and striking its surface with the kitchenware, he held the microphone close to capture the metal’s hidden, delicate vibrations. Meanwhile, a sound engineer in the living room improvised with a filter. When they played back the recording, they felt as if the sounds came from another planet. They embraced, celebrating a discovery without precedent. 60 years later, this sonic experiment continues to astonish us.
